IETF TLS chairs put Bernstein under 30-day post moderation
Messages from the cryptographer will be held and released only if chairs judge them on-topic and non-disruptive.
The chairs of the IETF TLS working group have placed D. J. Bernstein under 30-day moderation on the TLS mailing list for continued disruptive behavior.
Joseph Salowey announced the step on behalf of the chairs after consultation with the area director. It follows a series of earlier public warnings. Under BCP 9 and RFC 3934 the chairs could have suspended posting rights entirely; instead they chose moderation. Bernstein's messages will be held, reviewed by the chairs for being on-topic and non-disruptive, and released only after that check. Release may take up to two working days.
Bernstein is a prominent cryptographer whose work has shaped widely deployed primitives and protocols. The TLS list is a primary venue for discussion of the protocol that secures much of the web. Temporary prior review of one frequent participant's posts therefore constrains the flow of technical argument on an active standards list, even while leaving the door open for contributions that clear the chairs' filter.
