Nixpkgs core team disbands after 10 months

The Nixpkgs core team has disbanded, saying the governance role proved incompatible with sustained technical work and with members' health after only ten months.

In a statement on the NixOS Discourse, the team said it had originally expected a lightweight, consensus-focused position. Instead the load grew heavy enough that attrition set in, and a call for replacements drew only one active applicant. With a Steering Committee election due soon, the group concluded that dissolving itself was the honest path forward and might inform later governance attempts.

The departing members listed several concrete results from their tenure: a reformed committer delegation process that onboarded 19 new committers, an expanded merge bot that gave maintainers more autonomy, restored contact with GitHub that secured a sponsored Enterprise Cloud upgrade, triage help on a GitHub security advisory and the broader risks it exposed, and an initial automation and AI policy, along with handling of assorted escalated incidents.

They also directed sharp criticism at the Steering Committee. According to the statement, the SC lacks a working instinct for the delegation written into the project constitution, yet is not cohesive or engaged enough to decide matters at that level itself. The result, they wrote, has been unnecessary micromanagement of teams below it, chronically poor communication (including ambiguity over when an SC member speaks personally versus for the body), issues handed down with preferred outcomes already attached, and ownership taken of matters already delegated elsewhere, accompanied by slow or insufficient replies to concerns.
