Python elects its first Packaging Council

The Python community has seated its first Packaging Council, creating standing elected governance for the packaging ecosystem that has long relied on ad hoc leadership and a single standing delegate.

The inaugural council is Brett Cannon, Pradyun Gedam, Donald Stufft, Henry Schreiner, and Ralf Gommers. Organizers and voters described the slate as a broad cross-section of packaging and scientific-Python experience. On the discuss.python.org forum, H. Vetinari called the result a momentous occasion and wished the new body luck getting started.

The race was extremely close near the cutoff, with only six votes separating fourth place from seventh. Paul Moore, who for years shepherded packaging as standing delegate, missed a seat by a razor-thin margin. Congratulatory messages from Moore and others stressed the depth of talent on the ballot and thanked him for that prior leadership; one commenter quipped he should keep the informal title of Friendly Packaging Uncle.

Public ballot analysis noted that alternate counting methods largely produced the same winners, that most voters saw at least one of their choices elected, and that core packaging and scientific cohorts gained seats while OS-distribution voices appeared weaker. Hugo van Kemenade cautioned that different methods also change how people vote, so such counterfactuals are uncertain.

The council now takes formal responsibility for steering packaging standards and community process that previously rested on informal coordination.
