Emacs hermes debate and 31.1, DRM fabric and P2PDMA
Emacs development combined a heated NonGNU packaging dispute with the 31.1 release, while DRM maintainers advanced fabric topology and peer-to-peer DMA work. Blender and Kdenlive communities also pushed sky rendering and shader-effect tooling forward.
Hermes package debate for NonGNU ELPA
Richard Stallman, Eli Zaretskii and other emacs-devel participants debated whether the hermes package should enter NonGNU ELPA. The dispute focused on its LLM model choices and potential service-as-a-software-substitute paths. The outcome matters for free-software packaging policy and which AI-related tools appear in the official NonGNU archive.
Emacs 31.1 released
Emacs 31.1 source and Windows binaries were announced on emacs-devel. The thread also covered a minor build bug report and terminology clarifications on package addition. Users and package maintainers tracking the next stable series have a concrete baseline to test and package against.
Vendor-neutral DRM fabric topology RFC
An RFC on dri-devel proposed drm-fabric.ko together with a Generic Netlink userspace API for vendor-neutral accelerator interconnect topology. The design covers fabric, endpoint, port and peer objects aimed at scale-up accelerator interconnects. Kernel developers working on multi-accelerator systems gain a shared topology layer instead of per-vendor ad-hoc plumbing.
PCI P2PDMA TLP-class routing series
Version 6 of an 18-patch PCI/P2PDMA series refined TLP-class routing and ACS checks for asymmetric switches and dma-buf. Five participants reviewed the updates on dri-devel. The changes improve reliability of peer-to-peer DMA paths used by modern GPU and accelerator configurations.
Blender Hillaire 2020 sky and celestials WIP
A community work-in-progress ported the Hillaire 2020 sky model to Blender 5.3, supplied benchmarks and celestials, and asked for feedback on DevTalk. Thirteen participants exchanged dozens of technical messages. Rendering developers and artists obtain a physically based sky option still under active review.
DP MST skip for unplugged ports
A patch proposed skipping DisplayPort MST connector creation for downstream ports with ddps equal to zero in order to cut spurious DPCD reads. The maintainer questioned the impact on userspace connector lifetime. Display-stack maintainers care because fewer false connectors simplify hotplug handling.
Nova-core page table and VMM series
A 16-patch repost of nova-core Rust work on GPU page tables, VMM and BAR1 mapping drew maintainer and automated review comments on traits and safety. Seven people participated on dri-devel. Progress on the Rust GPU driver path remains relevant for nouveau-adjacent development.
Shadertoy Frei0r plugin for Kdenlive
A developer announced Shadert0y, a standalone Frei0r plugin that runs Shadertoy GLSL shaders inside Kdenlive and MLT, and iterated on it with community input. Eight participants discussed the release on KDE Discuss. Video editors gain direct use of a large body of existing GLSL effects without leaving the MLT pipeline.
