Nixpkgs CUDA team fractures over funding and scope

The Nixpkgs effort to package NVIDIA CUDA and related GPU stacks has split after a clash over who the work serves, how corporate money is handled, and who controls the associated infrastructure.

On the NixOS Discourse, longtime contributor SergeK said the CUDA team fractured following a six-hour session at NixCon in Krakow. He accused newly onboarded members, backed by one longer-term maintainer, of forking a new team under the NixOS Foundation, taking over talks with NVIDIA and funding partners, and assuming the domain, infrastructure, and a related GitHub organization. In his account, the breakaway group moved to shrink an originally broad mandate of supporting GPU-accelerated scientific computing, which he cast as offloading commercial employers’ internal maintenance (especially LLM-oriented stacks) onto unpaid Nixpkgs labor. He rejected unpaid work aimed at someone else’s profits and said he wants collaborators still interested in scientific computing, non-LLM CUDA uses, older hardware NVIDIA is deprecating, cheaper CUDA alternatives, and workloads such as graphics, VFX, vision, physics, and chemistry.

Infinisil disputed the framing that the team had been terminated, stating SergeK had been removed from it.

The split has fed a wider argument about conflicts of interest when packaging teams fill with company employees, how the Foundation steers corporate co-funding, and whether maintainers should organize for bargaining power rather than treat sponsorship as charity. Supporters of SergeK’s line call Nixpkgs a commons that needs maintainers independent of outside pressure and worry governance is drifting corporate-friendly. Critics found his positions over-complicated or destructive, preferred peaceful coexistence of a science-focused effort beside the current CUDA work, and questioned whether “union” leverage via withholding updates is realistic when others will keep shipping packages for free or under employer pay, and when nixpkgs’s value is continuity of the collection itself.

SergeK is soliciting people to restart a broader, less extractive accelerators effort outside the path he attributes to the Foundation-aligned group.
